TONY MARTIN Talks About Singing Classic WHITESNAKE Songs With M3

June 26, 2003

Former BLACK SABBATH singer Tony Martin, who is currently fronting M3, the new "classic WHITESNAKE" tribute group featuring Bernie Marsden (guitar, ex-WHITESNAKE),Micky Moody (guitar, ex-WHITESNAKE),Neil Murray (ex-WHITESNAKE, BLACK SABBATH),Jimmy Copley (drums, ex-PAUL RODGERS, GILLAN, BECK),and Mark Stanway (keyboards, ex-MAGNUM),recently spoke about what it's like stepping into David Coverdale's shoes after spending a decade singing material originally written and performed by Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio. "[It's] a lot more comfortable than [stepping into] Ozzy's shoes!!!" he said in an interview posted at M3's official web site. "I have to admit the blues thing passed me by somewhat, and I always found it hard to get the natural flow to put it across. This was one of the things about [late SABBATH/RAINBOW drummer] Cozy [Powell] — he was firmly in the blues era but with power, and when we wrote things for SABBATH it was always quite a task. Somehow the blues of WHITESNAKE has a more understandable feel ... but the words are bloody horrible!!!! Actually, that ain't true, the words are OK, but in places they are a bit tacky. But then that's the period and the sentiment of the singer at the time, and as Cozy always said ... who am I to reason why?? It worked for them so what the fuck if I gotta sing ... 'just to get in your pants,' then so be it. What's funny is that having done 10 years of 'misty morning, devil rising, turn round and your dead' stuff, getting into someone's pants is actually quite refreshing."

In the same interview, Martin was asked about other projects that he's currently involved with. "[I'm] still trying to get my solo stuff together," he said. "The problem I have is that my work is so varied and I was hoping to leave the SABBATH thing behind now. The advice that I got from Bernie when I first went to see him kind of makes sense in that it's not possible and nor should I want to leave the SABBATH thing behind, just don't dwell on it. So it's in my back pocket and right now I'm doing whatever lights my candle. And might I say it's very easy to light my candle these days. I really like working with these guys and it's great to be working with Neil again, actually it's just great to be working!! So whatever it brings ... bring it on!!!"
